Yesterday, twin suicide bombings in the Afghan cities of Mazar-e Sharif and Kabul killed at least 60 people and wounded hundreds. Many of the casualties occurred at a Shiite shrine apparently targeted by one of the suicide bombers. The sectarian nature of the attack marks a rare occurrence in an Afghanistan which has largely avoided violence between the majority Sunni and minority Shiite populations.
