Indonesia: The Solo Church Bombing & Rising Sectarian Violence
Extremism in Asia / Research and Visualization

On Sunday, September 25, 2011, a suicide bomber targeted a Christian church in the Indonesian city of Solo, Central Java.  The bomber detonated his explosives while at the entrance of the building at 10:55am local time, killing himself and one other person.  The church, Bethel Full Gospel, is a sister church to American pastor Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church.

Using i2 Analyst’s Notebook, ISVG research analysts Rick Kania, Michael Fain, and Amira Al-Zoubi, have created an analysis and a number of visualizations outlining the attack.  Additionally, the increased sectarian violence in the region is highlighted.  The visualizations include several detailed maps and timelines, as well as a chart depicting the operational linkages between the area’s active terror-group members.  Jemaah Islamiyya, Majlis Mujahideen Indonesia, and it’s offshoot Jemaah Ansharut Tauhid are discussed.
