Cargo Plane Bomb Plot
Extremism in Europe / Research and Visualization

At ISVG, 90% of our efforts are aimed at collecting and coding data on violent extremist organizations, their members, and their activities.  When major attacks are attempted or carried out, we usually make extra efforts to capture the details of the plot to provide the most comprehensive analysis of the event.  As you can see from our overview briefing, the power of the RDB is in its ability to capture tactical details of events and those alleged to be responsible for them.  These details can be quickly visualized using visualization and analytical tools.  Soon we’ll be expanding the Violent Extremism Knowledge Base (VKB) to include detailed analyses of the plots attempted/carried out by violent extremist organizations in the United States.  Whenever possible, we’ll try to present the profile of the event and provide visualizations of the plot and its perpetrators.  We’ll try to place the extent of the plot into the context of global violent extremism networks by visualizing linkages of the plot using the RDB.

This post highlights the Cargo Plane Bomb Plot from October 2010.  We visualized the principal actors in the plot, their interrelations, and high-level linkages to violent extremist organizations.  Each of the nodes in this chart have been expanded in the background from the ISVG iBase.  The complete timeline of the plot is provided here as well.  All visualizations were produced by ISVG researcher Amira al-Zoubi.
